The Bills Payment feature allows users to conveniently settle various types of bills directly through the app and designed to be secure and user-friendly—reducing friction in bill payments, clear breakdown of fees and payment status, and secure transactions and reliable confirmation.
The Challenge
Designing the bills payment feature in Fortune Pay app comes with several challenges, such as complex biller integration. Each biller (e.g., utility companies, telecom providers, government agencies) has different APIs, data formats, and payment confirmation flows that might cause inconsistent user experience and increased risk of user error and failed transactions.
The Solution
Here are the key enhancements considered in designing 🤔
User Flow Complexity
By providing tooltips, examples, or inline help for each required field and having an option to save frequently used biller details for faster future payments helps user to have a smooth and engaging user experience.
Real-Time Confirmation
Designing a loading state while waiting for biller confirmation, and allowing users to generate temporary receipts with a “Pending” status if confirmation is delayed and download receipts directly from the app.
Clear and concise content
Providing clear error messages and next steps (e.g., retry, contact support) and using icons and visual cues to aid understanding.
Takeaways
What I learned 💭
Even though bills payment involves complex data (account numbers, reference codes, due dates), simplifying the user flow—through smart defaults, saved billers, and clear instructions—dramatically improves experience. Additionally, as more billers and payment options are added, the UI must remain clean and scalable so I learned to use components to accommodate future growth.
Next Steps ✨
Conduct usability testing to reveal pain points I hadn’t anticipated since I am only tasked to do the UI Design of the app—like confusion over biller categories or unclear field labels. I know that iterating based on real user feedback is a key to refining the experience.
